Biography

One of the numerous thoughtful, literate gangsta rappers to emerge from New York during the mid-'90s, AZ never garnered the attention of peers like Nas and Jay Z. Instead, he saw his debut album, Doe or Die, become a critical favorite in late 1995 before his career suddenly went downhill after such modest and short-lived success. Critics and b-boys alike celebrated AZ and his debut album for a literate approach to the gangsta lifestyle. Like his aforementioned peers Nas and Jay Z, AZ not only brought intelligence to his rhymes but also an impressive flow and delivery that further set him apart from the flood of New York MCs fighting for survival in the crowded rap game. Unfortunately, despite Doe or Die's quiet success, AZ stumbled in successive years, finally scoring a new major-label relationship with Motown in the early 2000s.

Born in Brooklyn as Anthony Cruz, AZ first came to the greater rap community's attention in a big way after his stellar performance on Nas' "Life's a Bitch" in 1994. Given AZ's similarity to Nas and the overwhelming response to Nas' Illmatic album, it was just a matter of time before AZ would score a record deal, a feat he accomplished in 1995. The resulting debut album, Doe or Die, shook the New York hip-hop scene as Nas' Illmatic and Mobb Deep's Infamous had done shortly before it. Like those albums, Doe or Die reveled in the street life -- hustling for cash, peddling drugs, violent encounters, mandatory boasting, struggling daily just to maintain -- but took a literate and thoughtful approach to the often exploitative gangsta motifs. Furthermore, like Nas, AZ had Pete Rock crafting the beats, which won the young rapper instant credibility among the hip-hop community.

When word hit the street that AZ was an official member of the supergroup known as the Firm, his status only rose higher. Anchored by Nas, Foxy Brown, Nature, and AZ on the mics, with Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters on the beats, it would seem as if the group could do no wrong. The group's 1997 album ended up being a surprise failure, though, buried under ridiculous expectations and too much hype. But AZ's bad fortune didn't stop there. He returned a year later with his sophomore album, Pieces of a Man, an album that came and went relatively unnoticed and uncelebrated. For the next few years, AZ became a forgotten name. No longer with a major-label contract, he managed to release the little-heard S.O.S.A. record in 2000. It didn't sell many copies or resurrect his career but rather re-affirmed the fact that he was indeed a talented rapper whether the public and the industry wanted to acknowledge it or not.

Within a year's time, AZ secured a new major-label relationship with Motown, a label that had never had much, if any, success with rap artists. Still, the Brooklyn rapper wouldn't let the label's reputation hold him back, as he illustrated on 9 Lives, unofficially billed as his comeback album. Though lacking big-name production and employing a skimpy roster of guest rappers, the album did showcase AZ's lyrical prowess and his endurance, anchored by the sample-laced lead single "Problems." Aziatic from 2002 received positive reviews overall and two years later by the double disc career overview Decade 1994-2004. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

Anthony Cruz (born March 9, 1972 in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York), better known as AZ, is an American rapper currently residing in Englewood, New Jersey. Originally known as AZ The Visualiza, AZ has achieved a strong fanbase in spite of little mainstream success. He is of African-American and Dominican descent.

Biography

AZ was born Anthony Cruz to an African-American mother and a Dominican father. AZ first came to prominence by appearing on Nas' landmark album Illmatic on the song "Life's a Bitch" (1994)—he was the only guest emcee to appear on that critically acclaimed album. After a bidding war, AZ signed with EMI, and soon released Doe Or Die (1995) to more critical acclaim than commercial sales.[citation needed] The album's lead single, "Sugar Hill" (featuring Miss Jones), became AZ's only major commercial success as a solo artist, reaching the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and achieving Gold status.[citation needed]. AZ's EMI contract was transferred to sister label Noo Trybe/Virgin Records when the EMI Label Group was shut down.

AZ's fan base grew considerably after he joined The Firm, a supergroup comprised of AZ, Nas, Foxy Brown, and Nature, with Dr. Dre and The Trackmasters producing. The Firm's only albun, The Album, was regarded as critically disappointing.[citation needed] Pieces of a Man, AZ's second solo release, didn't sell well. Independently, AZ released S.O.S.A. to little fanfare in 2000. Soon, however, AZ signed with Motown//Universal Records and released 9 Lives, which returned his name to popular consciousness among hip-hop critics but still did little to bolster his sales.

In 2002, he released Aziatic. A single from the album, "The Essence," was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The video to its first single, "I'm Back," received moderate MTV2 play. Over the course of these years, AZ and Nas (who had appeared on each others' albums several times apart from The Firm album) gradually stopped doing tracks together. Aziatic is regarded as AZ's comeback album, with restoring his crebility after his previous disappointing efforts. The album showcased AZ's refined lyrical ability on songs such as "Hands in the Air" and "Paradise," and his unmatched story-telling in "Fanmail."

AZ was supposed to release an album titled Final Call', around late 2004 or early 2005. Due to massive bootlegging, however, the album was never released. Instead, A.W.O.L. was released on September 6, 2005. This album featured many tracks that were on the unreleased Final Call, as well as some new ones—the first single was the DJ Premier-produced "The Come Up," and it became a moderately popular single.[citation needed]

AZ's 6th solo album, The Format, was released on November 7, 2006. Four tracks from the album were leaked or released as singles: "Royal Salute," a response to a dis in 50 Cent's track "What If"; "Rise & Fall (feat. Little Brother)"; "Animal," "The Format" (produced by DJ Premier), and "The Truth" (produced by Lil' Fame of M.O.P.)[1] He also appeared on The Alchemist's mixtape Chemistry Files, on the track "Professional Style" & on Styles P's The Ghost Sessions on a song called "The Hardest." It is known that AZ has sold over 3 million albums in the US with out having a platinum solo album.

Technique

AZ is known for his smooth, rhythmic cadence of delivery. He is also known for his use of multi-syllable rhyme schemes, internal rhymes, unconventional rhymes, and a large vocabulary.

Example Verses

"So in God I trust, I lust for a 850 Deluxe

And until I touch a million plus, ain't much to discuss

Diamonds and double-digits, Gianni Versace down with lizards

It's realism so I visualize it to live it

Movin’ cleverly with intentions of longevity

Strong pedigree got me touchin’ papers, others would never see G

So through the quest and my glow is fluorescent

Symbolizes the essence, while movin’ in the effervescence"

—"Gimme Yours"

"Visualizin’ the realism of life and actuality

Fuck who’s the baddest, a person's status depends on salary

And my mentality is money-oriented

I’m destined to live the dream for all my peeps who never made it

’Cause, yeah, we were beginners in the ’hood as Five Percenters

But somethin’ must have got in us ’cause all of us turned to sinners

Now some restin’ in peace and some are sittin’ in San Quentin

Others such as myself are tryin’ to carry on tradition

Keepin’ this wealth of essence, street ghetto essence inside us

’Cause it provides us with the proper insight to guide us"

—From Nas’ "Life's A Bitch"
